Samhørighed (Togetherness), Standing Man and Woman
myminifactory
In this stunning work, atop a majestic Ionic column capital, two young lovers stand united in uniformed elegance. The woman embodies the likeness of Edith Wessel, a muse who captivated J.F. Willumsen's heart, and her partner possibly echoes the sculptor himself. This enchanting group was created during Willumsen's devoted admiration for Edith, evident in the subtle nuances that distinguish the treatment of their costumes' folds. From 1898 to 1899, Danish sculptor J.F. Willumsen drew profound inspiration from the neoclassical master Bertel Thorvaldsen. Willumsen transformed Thorvaldsen's Amor and Psyche into a foundation for Samhørighed; the entire composition bears striking similarities to the neoclassical masterpiece, from the positioning of the arms to the themes of harmony that unite them. The woman's lips are dry, but her left hand shields her face, revealing Willumsen's deliberate choice to convey young lovers embracing unity.
