Palazzo Pitti Galleria Palatina The so-called Salon dei Forestieri of the Medici period was transformed, at the will of Grand Duke Peter Leopold, into a magnificent ballroom (the largest in the entire palace today) adorned with high-relief stucco decorations created between 1774 and 1776 by the Lugano brothers Grato and Giocondo Albertolli, who were also entrusted with the decoration of the Imperial Villa del Poggio's ballroom. The ornate richness of the stuccos, entirely focused on neoclassical symbols and motifs, gives the environment a refined elegance accentuated by the brightness of the white, which stands out against the tinted backgrounds in pastel colors - pink, green, ochre - restored to their delicate hues after recent restorations. The lateral walls are divided into architectural intervals by Corinthian pilasters and large portals, the latter richly decorated with cornices culminating in over-door timpanums (hollow arches) that open into adjacent rooms. In this context of extreme modernity and geometric rigor, eleven chandeliers purchased in 1785 from Giacinto Micali's store-emporium in Livorno (together with mirrors from Paris) were inserted and positioned according to a symmetrical scanning of space and light: one larger at the center and ten on the sides (four on the long sides and two on the short ones). This magnificent ballroom became an important international fashion scenario in the immediate post-war period: from the first show organized by Giovanni Battista Giorgini in 1951, and for the next thirty years, the catwalks of the White Room have contributed to spreading international fashion, bringing the name 'Pitti' worldwide.
