Saint Sylvester, André Keldermans (around 1400 - before 1488) or Antoine Keldermans (around 1450 - 1512)? Brabant, Mechelen? Around 1480-1500, limestone, original polychrome. Musée du Cinquantenaire (Brussels, Belgium). Captured with CapturingReality. According to legend, St. Sylvester healed Emperor Constantine of leprosy and then received the papal tiara from his hands. During his papacy, he personally witnessed Emperor Constantine's conversion to Christianity. He also managed to tame the Capitol Dragon, a fearsome monster depicted at his feet like a domesticated animal. The face of the saint bears delicate features, eerily close to reality. This statue likely originated from the rood screen, or choir fence, in Mechelen's cathedral Saint-Rombaut, demolished in 1664. Follow me on Twitter @GeoffreyMarchal for more updates.
