Saint Sylvester, a figure shrouded in mystery, André Keldermans (circa 1400 - before 1488) or Antoine Keldermans (circa 1450 - 1512), Brabant's skilled craftsman? He likely hailed from Mechelen. The statue, crafted between 1480-1500 from limestone with original polychrome, now resides at the Musée du Cinquantenaire in Brussels, Belgium. Legend has it that Saint Sylvester cured Emperor Constantine of leprosy and was subsequently bestowed the papal tiara. During his reign, he allegedly attended the emperor's conversion to Christianity. Moreover, he managed to tame the Capitol Dragon, a fearsome creature depicted at his feet like a docile pet. The saint's face, characterized by delicate features, bears an uncanny resemblance to a real portrait. This statue likely originated from the rood screen or choir fence of the demolished Saint-Rombaut cathedral in Mechelen, circa 1664.
