Saint Sebastian, who met his end around 288 AD, was an early Christian martyr and saint. Christians believe that Diocletian's reign of terror against Christians led to Sebastian's demise. Typically, artists depict him bound to a post or tree, riddled with arrows. However, according to legend, Sebastian was rescued by Irene of Rome and nursed back to health. After his recovery, he headed straight to Diocletian to warn him about his sinful ways, but this warning ultimately sealed his fate - he was beaten to death. Today, Saint Sebastian is revered in both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. The story of Sebastian's martyrdom first emerged through 4th-century bishop Ambrose of Milan, who mentioned it in his sermon (number 22) on Psalm 118. Ambrose revealed that Sebastian hailed from Milan, where he was already being honored as a saint at the time. Saint Sebastian remains a well-liked male saint among athletes and many others.
