Saint Sebastian
sketchfab
About 1620-1600 Crafted wood, richly ornamented with gold leaf Germany 1980.41 A revered Christian saint and martyr, Sebastian was sentenced to death by the Roman emperor Diocletian. Fastened to a sturdy tree trunk, he endured numerous arrow wounds, yet miraculously survived only to be brutally beaten later on. This striking figure exemplifies the distinctive blend of artistic styles that defined German sculpture during the early 1600s. The elegant pose and remarkable anatomical accuracy of Sebastian's legs demonstrate the influence of Italian Mannerism, while the crisp, stylized patterns of his hair and loincloth evoke memories of German Gothic works from the 1400s. A natural branch was skillfully shaped and refined to create the tree to which Sebastian is securely tied. Adapted from description at the Cleveland Museum of Art Captured with a Nikon D5600 in the gallery at CMA. Constructed in RealityCapture, retopologized in InstantMeshes and MeshLab, and finalized in Blender.
