This sculpture by Giovanni de Fonduli e Bottega (1420/1430-1497) shows Saint Peter.\r\nSaint Peter was one of Jesus Christ's twelve apostles, early Christian leaders of the Great Church. Pope Gregory I called him repeatedly "Prince of the Apostles". According to Catholic teaching, Jesus promised Peter in Matthew 16:18 a special place in the Church. He is traditionally considered the first Bishop of Rome, and also by Eastern Christian tradition as the first Patriarch of Antioch. Ancient Christian churches all honor Peter as a major saint and as the founder of the Church of Antioch and the Roman Church, but disagree on the authority of his successors (the primacy of the Bishop of Rome).
