Saint George, Relief from ca. 1500, Stokkemarke Church, Lolland, National Museum (Copenhagen) now resides at a secure location. Made with Memento software by Autodesk, later renamed Remake. St. George's legend tells that he was a Roman officer in Asia Minor who gave his life as a martyr in the year 303. As a champion knight saint, he earned fame for liberating a princess from a powerful dragon. His reputation grew as a protector against leprosy. The Danish leper hospitals, built outside towns to contain the spread of infection, were called St. George Houses.
