Saint George

Saint George

myminifactory

This is a reproduction of a famous marble sculpture created by Donatello depicting Saint George. Originally, the marble is one of fourteen sculptures commissioned by Florence's guilds to decorate Orsanmichele church's exterior niches. The Arte dei Corazzai e Spadai, a group of armorers and sword makers, was responsible for commissioning St. George. In 1858, a stone thrown at the sculpture damaged its nose, and in 1892 Donatello's work was relocated to Florence's Bargello Museum. The original sculpture had been stolen from Poggio a Caiano's Villa Medici, but in May 1945 it was recovered by Frederick Hart in Neumelans and returned to Italy on July 20th, 1945. In 1976, the box base was reattached to the statue.
