Saint Gaudens Double Eagle

The Saint-Gaudens double eagle is a twenty-dollar gold coin minted from 1907 to 1933 in the United States. Named after its designer, sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it is acclaimed for its beauty and was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to enhance American coinage. Despite challenges such as Saint-Gaudens's poor health and high relief design problems, the coins were eventually released, albeit with changes made by Charles E. Barber, the Mint's chief engraver. Controversy arose when the first coins omitted "In God We Trust", prompting Congress to intervene for its inclusion. Primarily used in international trade, these coins are now highly valuable collectibles, like the 1933 double eagle that sold for $7.6 million.
