Saint Denis de Paris

Saint Denis de Paris, Brabant, Early 16th century, walnut, original polychromy still visible. Musée du Cinquantenaire (Brussels, Belgium). Created with Autodesk's ReMake and ReCap. In the 3rd century, Saint Denis was dispatched by the Pope to Gaul to convert the pagans living there. First bishop of Paris, he met a gruesome end, decapitated just a few years later. By legend, he miraculously picked up his severed head and carried it from Montmartre, where he had been brutally martyred, to the site where he wished to be laid to rest. It was here that the magnificent basilica of Saint Denis was constructed, where France's monarchs would eventually be buried. Follow me on Twitter at @GeoffreyMarchal for more updates.
