Constantina, also known as Constantia and Constantiana, was born after 307 and before 317, but the exact date of her birth is unknown. She died in 354 at an advanced age, and later became known as Saint Constance. Born to Roman Emperor Constantine the Great and his second wife Fausta, daughter of Emperor Maximian, Constantina received the title of Augusta from her father. Venerated as a saint, Constantina's medieval legend has been distorted by exaggeration, diverging significantly from what is actually known about her character. In English, she is also referred to as Saint Constance. This exquisitely carved and painted bust depicts Saint Constance but is commonly referred to as 'La Belle Florentine' (The Beautiful Florentine Girl). It was created by Desiderio da Settignano in the late 15th century. Renowned for his gentle style, Desiderio da Settignano stands out among the greatest Florentine sculptors of the Renaissance. Desiderio's artworks are notable for their delicate and soft texture, which he achieved through skilled chiseling. Although he died at a young age, Desiderio created numerous masterpieces in marble, including the famous bust of St. John Martelli.
