Saint Catherine of Alexandria, also known as Saint Catherine of the Wheel and The Great Martyr Saint Catherine, was a Christian saint and virgin who was martyred in the early 4th century by the pagan emperor Maxentius. According to her legend, she was a princess and a scholar who became a Christian at the age of fourteen and converted hundreds of people to Christianity. She died as a martyr around the age of eighteen. Over a thousand years after her death, Saint Joan of Arc identified Catherine as one of the saints who appeared to her and gave her advice. This image is of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, created by an unknown artist in France around 1500-1515.
