The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, commonly known as Saint Basil's Cathedral, stands proudly in Red Square, Moscow, Russia. Officially recognized as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat or Pokrovsky Cathedral, this museum-quality building was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible from 1555 to 1561. Its construction commemorates a pivotal moment in Russian history - the conquest of Kazan and Astrakhan. For over two decades, it held the title of Moscow's tallest structure until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600.
