Saint Barbara at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
myminifactory
This limewood sculpture of Saint Barbara was crafted from superior quality Limewood and originates from Augsburg in Germany, carved circa 1510. The exquisite fine details of this sculpture clearly indicate that the figure was not intended to be fully painted, instead showcasing its inherent beauty. The cameo-like buttons on her mantle vividly depict Hercules and the centaur Nessus, emblems of Barbara's unyielding strength. The sculpture is also remarkable for the dynamic rendering of the drapery, likely a result of Italian Renaissance influences in Augsburg during the early sixteenth century.
