This image of Saint Anthony of Padua with the Christ Child on a book was crafted by skilled artisans in the kingdom of Kongo, where Christianity had taken root towards the end of the fifteenth century, shortly after Portuguese explorers arrived on their shores. A unique form of Catholicism emerged among the Kongolese people, blending traditional European iconography with local symbolism. Anthony is portrayed as a young monk, conforming to European artistic conventions. The child, however, wields a fly whisk, an emblem of authority deeply rooted in Kongolese culture.
