Human: A sailing ship is a powerful vessel designed for sea travel that utilizes sails mounted on masts to capture the force of wind and propel the ship forward. There are numerous sail plans that enable sailing ships to move efficiently, employing either square-rigged or fore-and-aft sails. Some vessels carry square sails on each mast - the brig and full-rigged ship, referred to as ship-rigged when they have three or more masts. Others use only fore-and-aft sails on each mast - schooners. Still others combine square and fore-and aft sails, including the barque, barquentine, and brigantine. Early sailing ships were used for navigating rivers and coastal waters in Ancient Egypt and the Mediterranean. The first independently invented blue water sea-going sailing ships were developed by the Austronesian peoples with the innovative fore-and-aft crab-claw sail as well as the culturally unique catamaran and outrigger boat technologies. These enabled the rapid Austronesian expansion into the islands of the Indo-Pacific since 3000 BCE from an origin in Taiwan, and facilitated the establishment of the first maritime trading network in the Indo-Pacific from at least 1500 BCE. Later developments in Asia led to the creation of the junk and dhow - vessels that incorporated cutting-edge innovations not found in European ships of the time.
