Small Sailboat Hull Designed for Make It Float Challenge My small sailboat hull is designed specifically for the Make It Float challenge. The entire design revolves around being printed on my trusty Printrbot Simple XL. If printing goes well, I might just add a remote-controlled twist to it. The hull's original design draws inspiration from many full-size sailboats' characteristics. My primary goal was to create a printer-friendly hull that still captures the essence of a real sailboat. All parts were crafted using Sketchup, and the hull is designed to print without support material if set up according to the provided print setup file. The Hull pieces are optimized for 75% or higher infill printing, while the bow and stern can be printed at lower infills (10% should suffice). I'm planning to print soon and will update if infill needs adjustment. The keel and rudder parts require 100% infill. The hull is designed to be accessible to all experience levels, and assembly should also be manageable for those with little to no expertise in 3D printing or modeling. Tools Needed: * Hobby Knife * CA Glue * Hand Drill + Drill Index * Sandpaper (80 Grit) Good Luck Printing! Update #1: June 22nd, 2015 - MKII I've completed the initial design of the hull, keel, and rudder. I successfully printed the keel and rudder with excellent results. The keel features 34 dimes for counterbalance. I'll start printing the hull tomorrow, hoping to achieve great success. I've redesigned almost every part of the hull, adding pin locators to the hull panels and areas for more dimes to ensure the hull floats correctly on the water line. Update: June 25th, 2015 The first hull pieces are coming off the printer, and I'm thrilled with their quality. One thing I always aim for is designing around minimal support material usage. So far, the design seems to be printing well without any issues. I've also begun researching ways to add mounting locations for RC gear (servos, batteries, receiver). My goal is to make it possible to transform from static to RC with just a few reprinted pieces. I'm working on the mast and rigging setup and should post the files soon. Update: June 29th, 2015 I'm nearing the final stretch of printing the hull pieces before moving on to the deck. Every print has come out as designed, requiring minimal post-process clean-up. I've decided to use hot glue for assembly instead of CA, allowing me to ensure a tight seal. I've also reworked the rudder, resizing the bearing for less play and adding a tiller that hooks up to a servo for potential RC systems. I'll post these files tonight. Water testing should start in just a few days! Update: July 2nd, 2015 The hull is now fully printed! I'm working on a testing video to share soon. I've also started creating a stand to hold the boat when it's out of the water; those files will be posted shortly. Update #3: July 16th, 2015 I've made some changes to the hull. The stern and two rear panels now have a new alignment system, while the bow has been modified for less weight to help it float higher on the water line. I'm printing the mast parts today and should post pics soon. https://youtu.be/gqDTMTm4KUA
