A sailing ship is a powerful seafaring vessel that utilizes sails mounted on masts to capture the energy of the wind and propel itself forward. Various sail plans are employed by sailing ships, using either square-rigged or fore-and-aft sails to gain speed. Some vessels carry square sails on each mast - the brig and full-rigged ship, which is said to be ship-rigged when there are three or more masts. Others rely solely on fore-and-aft sails on each mast - schooners. A combination of both square and fore-and aft sails is also used in certain ships, including the barque, barquentine, and brigantine. In Asia, sailing ships developed differently, producing vessels such as the junk and dhow that featured innovations not seen in European ships at that time. Technically speaking, a ship during the Age of Sail was a specific type of vessel, characterized by a bowsprit and three masts, each consisting of a lower mast, topmast, and topgallant mast. Sailing ships with predominantly square rigs became widespread during the Age of Discovery, when they traversed oceans between continents and circumnavigated the globe. Most sailing ships were merchant vessels, but the Age of Sail also witnessed the development of large fleets of well-armed warships. The Age of Sail gradually came to an end with the advent of steam-powered ships, which did not rely on favorable winds.
