The okinawan sai is a traditional martial arts weapon that originated in Okinawa, Japan. This sharp metal device features two curved sideprongs known as yoku projecting from the handle, or tsuka. Many variations of sai exist with different prong configurations designed for trapping and blocking. Prior to its introduction in Okinawa, the sai was already being used in various Asian countries including India, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It is likely that the sai was brought to Okinawa from one or several of these regions simultaneously. Silat practitioners commonly refer to the sai as chabang in Indonesian or tekpi in Malay. Early evidence in Japanese art suggests that the chabang predates the sai's use in Okinawa and China, based on the Indian trisula. The word trisula can also refer to a long or short-handled trident. Given that the trisula was created in South Asia, it is possible that the sai originated in India and spread with Hinduism and Buddhism. This theory is supported by the significance of the trisula as a Hindu-Buddhist symbol. In Okinawa, the sai was used by domestic police to arrest criminals and for crowd control. The use of sai in Japanese martial arts was improved in 1668 by Moto Chohei, an okinawan prince. The sai eventually reached Japan in the form of jitte, a single-pronged device although some jitte have two prongs like sai. Both are truncheon-like weapons used for striking, bludgeoning and also for multiple punctures over different positions on the body.
