Ancient Sri Lanka's distinctive architectural flair is embodied in the unique feature known as Moon-stone or Sandakada Pahana.[1][2][3] Typically placed at staircase bottoms and entranceways, this intricately carved semi-circular stone slab first emerged during the Anuradhapura period's later stage. As time progressed through the Polonnaruwa, Gampola, and Kandy eras, the sandakada pahana evolved into a distinct design. Historians point out that the sandakada pahana represents the cycle of Saṃsāra in Buddhism's teachings.
