Saami inspired knife with sheath (rough)

thingiverse

This is my second addition to Thingiverse; a Saami inspired knife! The Saami are one of the two native peoples of Feno-Scandia, that make a living herding reindeer in the far north (and to a lesser degree, mid-south) of what is today Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia (potentially latvia and estonia as well). Life can be fairly hard for them, and when the going gets tough, they reach for their trusty knife! Traditionally made from reindeer antler, rawhide, birch (or many other woods) and metal, and usually very intricately carved. (not shown in this model, since i cant seem to work out how to emboss on compound curves yet :c), these stylish, yet functional knives are vital to the survival of the Saami. I modeled this ambidextrous rendition after those knives, so all can enjoy a rough idea of what its like to own one. This model is very rough though. the pieces WILL go together fairly smoothly if printed well, but expect gaps and some uglyness. I may clean up the model later so the pieces sit more flush to one another. PLEASE NOTE, ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS!!! Support that "touches the build plate" is required for every print; yes, even the flat washer discs. Trial and error will be your friend in figuring out which way the handle stacks. The washers are printed in line, in order that they go on, you just have to find out which end of the line goes on first, and its orientation after that. If you look down the hole in the center of the handle pieces, you should notice the hole isnt totally centered.. the thicker side next to the hole should point toward the edge, the thinner side should point toward the spine. The rivets for the sheath will need to be processed after printing. take a lighter, and lightly create a button top on all 4 rivets. Put them through the rivet holes, cut the excess off fairly close to the sheath, then carefully light the remaining rivet material with a lighter (be careful to avoid soot discolouring your print. do this by heating the excess rivet material using the SIDE of the flame, NOT ABOVE IT). once soft (it dont take much flame) carefully smush them to the sheath. To make it right handed, assemble the sheath so that the crooked "antler" piece faces the opposite way to the "leather" part than is pictured above. The above picture is the left handed way (as I am left handed) The spine of the knife faces hook end of the sheath; and the edge faces the outside of the curve of the sheath when sheathing the knife. Some sanding and clean up work may be required to get a good, snug fit. Hope you enjoy, and please post pictures of it if you decide to make it! Skål!
