Of the nearly 24,000 objects in SAM's collection, two sculptures are undoubtedly the most iconic attractions, captivating visitors of all ages since its opening in 1933. They continue to draw in crowds, from newcomers to regulars alike. However, these beloved greeters were initially missing from the museum grounds for a long time. The camels have now taken their rightful place as guardians, welcoming everyone with open arms. Writing in 1968, 35 years after the arrival of SAM's Chinese camels and its grand opening, founding director Dr. Richard Fuller proudly declared them "unquestionably the most popular items" in the museum's vast collection. No doubt this was partly due to his contagious enthusiasm for letting kids ride them with joy.
