First flying on January 25, 1983, it initially went under the designation of SF-340. However, when Fairchild exited aircraft production in 1985 after producing about 40 units, Saab continued the production under the name Saab 340A. Sales dwindled by the late '90s, leading to production cancellation in 1998.
