S40RTS nesting tomography globes - "Seismic Matryoshka"

Global tomographic models of seismic velocity offer us vital information about the Earth's interior. Here, we illustrate S wave velocity variation so that slow velocities stand out prominently and fast velocities are depicted as depressions. For longer wavelengths, a three-layer model is available at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3254056. To capture the 3D nature of tomography models (where velocity structure varies with depth), we draw an analogy to Russian nesting dolls (Matryoshkas). The outer globe can be separated to reveal a deeper layer. The tomographic velocity model presented here is S40RTS (GJI, Ritsema et. al. 2011) and displays structures up to spherical harmonic degree 40. We have chosen layers at 100 km depth (shallow) and 2850 km (core-mantle boundary). These models can be printed without support, although this may result in a slightly messy interior at the top which may need cleaning before assembly so that everything fits snugly together. The holes are sized for 5 mm diameter, 2 mm thick cylindrical neodymium magnets which can be glued in place for a snap-together fit. Alternatively, use the 5mm plug STL provided for a grip-fit.
