S.S.C. Leif Ericson

Straight out of an AMT Plastic Model Kit box, the SSC Leif Ericson was crafted by legendary designer Matt Jefferies in 1968 for a line of AMT plastic models that would soon become iconic. While only the Leif Ericson saw production, its popularity waned, and it was eventually pulled from AMT's lineup due to lackluster sales. However, fate had other plans, as the model resurfaced years later in an unorthodox form - the "Glow in the Dark" Interplanetary UFO, a kitschy re-release that met the same swift demise. Despite its initial failure, the Leif Ericson has since become a beloved cult classic among sci-fi model enthusiasts. Round Two's re-issuance of the original kit has ensured its continued availability, and you can still find it on Amazon or Ebay today. Interestingly, this design also served as the inspiration for the "INSS MacArthur" in the novel "Mote in God's Eye." For more information about the Leif Ericson kit, click here. The intricate texturing depicted here is an accurate representation of how I brought my physical model to life, minus the hull plating, while the markings were painstakingly scanned directly from the kit's decal sets.
