This image of St. Peter is one of many crafted in England from a type of stone known as Nottingham Alabaster. The alabaster is well-suited for small sculptures due to its softness, making it easy to work with. It also has a translucent quality and can display a subtle sheen. During the Middle Ages, this material was primarily quarried in Nottinghamshire, giving rise to the name Nottingham Alabaster commonly associated with these pieces. However, they were mainly produced in London and shipped off to various European locations between the 14th and 16th centuries, including Portugal. The elongated appearance of St. Peter and the leafy ornamentation on the key he holds allow this figure to be dated back to the first quarter of the 15th century. Originally, it featured painted details, but today only faint remnants of these pigments remain visible.
