The massive asteroid, measuring a staggering 870 meters wide, was first spotted in the year 1999 by the skilled astronomers working on the LINEAR project. Classed as a close Earth-orbiting (NEO), potentially hazardous (PHO) object, 162173 Ryugu is believed to share its birthplace with the equally-shaped but more famous 101955 Bennu asteroid. In 2018, following an incredible four-year journey, the JAXA-operated Hayabusa2 spacecraft finally arrived at Ryugu and spent a full year studying this celestial wonder in great detail. The mission also managed to collect valuable samples from its surface, which are expected to touch down safely on Earth by December of the year 2020.
