I discovered an old rusty pencil sharpener at a flea market, its weathered surface telling stories of countless sharpenings past. I decided to breathe new life into this relic by subjecting it to a thorough digital reconstruction process. Firstly, I ran the file through Blender after conducting a photogrammetry scan using Meshroom. This intricate procedure involved feeding 47 out of 53 images taken with my trusty Nikon D500 into the system. To optimize results, I chose a higher aperture setting and selected the Describer Preset to High, as Normal mode struggled to handle reflective areas, while Ultra mode fell short by using fewer photos, resulting in an incomplete model. With this being my first time tackling a project of this sort, I encountered a few minor setbacks. However, after some trial and error, I successfully completed the base of the model by employing a combination of keyboard shortcuts: Shift, Alt, and Left Mouse Button to smooth out jagged edges, removing unwanted vertexes in the process; then I applied the S+Z+0 command to align all components along the z-axis; finally, I used the F key to establish a solid foundation for my digital replica.
