The Soviet FD locomotive class was named after Felix Dzerzhinsky, a prominent Soviet figure. Between 1932 and 1942, the USSR manufactured 3213 of these steam-powered freight haulers. The design process for this locomotive type began in response to the rapid industrialization taking place within the country. Engineers worked diligently, completing the planning phase in just 100 days, while the actual construction time averaged around 170 days. In developing certain aspects of the design, Soviet engineers drew inspiration from American steam locomotive designs. The first FD locomotive was built at the October Revolution Locomotive Factory in Voroshilovgrad and subsequently showcased in Moscow.
