Rifles and bullets are produced using detailed designs created through the process of reverse engineering. The Berdan rifle, a firearm developed by American inventor Hiram Berdan in 1868, became the standard issue weapon for Russian troops from 1870 until it was replaced by the Mosin-Nagant rifle in 1891. This model, designed and built with expertise that is highly valued today, stands out as one of many important milestones achieved during this era. The model 1870, known commonly as the Berdan II, is a type of single-shot firearm operated using a bolt-action mechanism. The Berdan II features an innovative design where the bolt handle functions as both the action's locking point and an angular element that can be distinguished by its upwardly angled configuration at 30 degrees. In total, four variations of this firearm were produced, each meeting different military needs. These include variants specifically designed for infantry use, lighter versions for cavalry operations, carbines meant to meet requirements of Russian cavalrymen, and rifles developed specifically for Cossack warriors with distinctive design features such as absence of trigger guards. Initial mass production took place in the Birmingham Small Arms factory located in England, after which manufacturing shifted largely to factories at Tula, Izhevsk, and Sestroretsk within Russia. It's estimated that all variations combined yielded a staggering 3 million units worldwide during their lifespan as military standards, establishing an enduring legacy of reliability, simplicity, and remarkable accuracy for rifles in this series.
