The Alabama National Monument is a prized archeological cave site managed by the National Park Service, which faces daunting challenges from erosion, climate change, and developmental pressures that threaten to alter its surroundings with urban land use changes nearby. In an effort to safeguard this irreplaceable treasure, the University of South Florida's Digital Humanities and Heritage Collections team joined forces with the Southeast Archeological Center from the National Park Service to utilize cutting-edge 3D technologies and spatial survey techniques in digitally documenting the cave's environs. By combining the results of our research with geophysical survey information, we have created a comprehensive foundation for conducting impact assessments and condition surveys that will ultimately enable the stabilization and long-term preservation of this delicate and historically significant site.
