Rune stones were erected by Vikings to commemorate powerful individuals and their heroic deeds. These stone monuments stood proudly along roads and bridges, painted in vibrant colours for all to see. They honoured those who had passed on, often at a distance from their final resting place. The runes reveal the lives of Viking era people like never before - their names, accomplishments, and struggles are inscribed on these stones. Travels, triumphs, and tragic fates are all documented in vivid detail. Rune stones offer an unparalleled glimpse into the world of ancient Scandinavia. While found mainly in Scandinavia, a significant number can be seen in Viking Age Denmark, with over 250 examples known to exist. Sweden boasts the largest collection, boasting more than 3000 inscriptions. These remarkable artefacts are showcased at the National Museum of Denmark, where visitors can explore an impressive selection of rune stones.
