Ruin of a power plant on the coast of Svalbard

The British coal mine's powerhouse dates back to the early 19th century and had a short operational life, lasting only a few years. This pioneering facility was cutting-edge for its era but not fully developed, which explains why it was left at the mine site unused elsewhere. Even now, numerous crates of spare parts are still stacked on the beach. As Svalbard's climate rapidly deteriorates, the power plant is expected to vanish completely in the near future due to extensive ground thawing.
