Rudolf von Alt's monument stands proudly at Minoritenplatz in Vienna, a testament to his enduring legacy. As a renowned Austrian painter and watercolorist, Rudolf von Alt was born into a family of artists - his father, Jakob Alt, was also a skilled painter. Growing up in the former Viennese suburb of Alservorstadt, Rudolf's younger brother Franz would also go on to become a talented artist. From a young age, Rudolf honed his craft under his father's guidance, coloring lithographs and developing his unique style. Between 1825 and 1832, he attended the prestigious Vienna Academy, where he refined his skills and became an esteemed member in 1848 - although his appointment was not officially confirmed until 1866. Today, Rudolf von Alt is widely regarded as the most beloved artist of 19th-century Vienna, with a staggering portfolio of over 1000 watercolors that capture the essence of Austria during his time. Remarkably, he drew the iconic St. Stephen's Cathedral an astonishing 100 times, cementing its place in Viennese history.
