Rubik's Cube Remixed
cults3d
I've had some luck with painting PLA, but stickers don't last very long. I decided to modify Ekobots-Rubik's Cube by indenting each outward-facing face slightly and printing a bunch of tiles to fit into the indents. The core remains the original file, so it wasn't uploaded. This isn't a "Speed" cube in any sense, but it is fully functional. It was printed entirely in PLA and secured with 6 M3x25 screws and 6 M3 washers. UPDATE: I had trouble with the screws backing out of the core after several twists on my original cube, so I made another modification. I modified the core itself by adding 3mm nut insets. The nuts were already very tight, but for extra security, I glued them in place to prevent movement. I also use white lithium grease to make it twist even smoother. UPDATE #2: Despite using the modifications above, I still had trouble keeping the screws from backing out while twisting the cube. So, I redesigned the core from scratch using Fusion 360. To make it easier to print, I cut the core in half, added fillets, and made it possible to use 3mm square nuts (which won't twist loose). The new core was printed in PETG for extra strength. Print two RC Core v2 pieces, then align them properly when gluing them together. This will create channels for all six square nuts. I also printed the new core without supports using Slic3r and only needed to clean up some overhangs at 50% infill (.2 layers). Additionally, I used a drill bit to clean up the screw channels by hand. Be careful not to overtighten the screws; I did and broke one of the corner pieces and side pieces (which I promptly reprinted).
