The rubber seal that was keeping water from draining out of the sink had given way. It broke apart into a single nozzle seal that allowed water to flow freely out of the sink again. This is an older type of sink that IKEA no longer sells, and you can't buy the separate seals on their own. I drew and printed out a new gasket from TPE material by Gembird because I had it lying around. That's why the seal is red in color. I'm not sure if this seal will work with the new sink drains that IKEA now sells, so we'll have to give it a try.
