Its rich history unfolds as far back as 1389 when King Juan I bestowed a privilege on Jeronimos church sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where a peasant named Gil Cordero stumbled upon an image of the Virgin at some point in the centuries between XIII and XIV. Legend has it that this same image had once traveled to Rome and Seville with the remains of San Lucas until, during the Muslim invasion in 714, it was discreetly hidden alongside the Guadalupe River - aptly named "hidden river" - where it remained for years, awaiting Gil Lamb's discovery. The course of history took a different turn when, in 1464, King Henry IV of Castile arrived at the scene accompanied by his sister, Infanta Isabel, also known as Isabella, with plans to secure her union through marriage with Alfonso V of Portugal. Infanta Isabel rebuffed the proposal, but found herself captivated instead by the sanctuary's enchanting beauty.
