Round 2. Scrap-iron and steel pipe against aliens
grabcad
A revised calculation on stresses in complex parts (aliens) is presented; details from the initial attempt are provided. Scrap-iron and steel pipes face off against aliens in the third round. Software for mesh conversion was tested, leading to a workflow involving Rhino with Grasshopper and Lattice, followed by Mesh processing, Autodesk's EnableMesh for Inventor v1.03, solid part creation of one structure section, assembly, and FEA analysis. Another approach using Inventor alone was attempted but deemed non-alien. A third workflow with Rhino, Grasshopper, Lattice, InStep v2.3 Mesh processing, solid part creation, assembly, and FEA analysis was tried. Strength analysis results indicate traditional pipes may be preferable due to load/weight ratio optimization in complex parts, which could be especially crucial for aerospace industries. However, it's concluded that direct comparisons of details with the same diameter are invalid; instead, weight-to-strength ratios should be compared. The mesh transformation process proved problematic, either significantly increasing file size or distorting geometry.
