Rotating BB8 Droid and BB8 Key Fob
thingiverse
Star Wars fans can now appreciate a fun one-piece moving print of a BB8 style droid. The design prints flat, not as a ball but (on an accurately set up 3D printer) its center section rotates freely from the outside/head part. This small and easy-to-print project does require you to pause your machine twice during printing to change filament color. With a 1mm thick Raft, change the filament color at 2mm (29%) and 7mm (86%) through the print. Following this simple process should provide a great fun print. The key to a successful result is precise control over color changes. Two options have been made available for printing enthusiasts. One option is designed as a 'Just for Fun' project, showcasing how moving/linked parts can be integrated into a single print. The other option is the Key Fob version with a slightly modified top featuring a hole for attaching a key ring. The total diameter of this design at standard scale is 35mm. Scaling it up uniformly will provide additional clearance for rotation if sticking issues arise, but scaling down could compromise fine clearances needed for proper function. Printing on an accurately calibrated 3D printer should enable users to achieve smooth and seamless spinning with ease. In cases where the rotating center doesn't move freely, a user can gently pry it away by running their fingernail around its grooves (refer to the provided images). Additional details can be found in the instructions and accompanying images. Two Colour Files: For users who have multi-colour 3D printing capabilities, two extra files are available for separate printing. Part "A" is designed for the bottom and top sections of the model (to be printed in white). Part B consists of the centre section (to be printed in orange), with versions available both for key fob attachments and as standalone models. Recommendations from the author include checking out other 'fun' designs found throughout this platform and sharing images of any successful prints.
