Rotary valves, featuring transversely rotating passages in a plug, regulate liquid or gas flow via attached pipes. The simple stopcock is an example. Applications are diverse, such as brass instrument pitch change, steam engine exhaust and steam control, open hearth furnace air-fuel reversal, chromatography sample loading, certain two-stroke engines, and hydraulic power steering control valves in automotive systems.
