This DIY encoder system utilizes a salvaged motor from a surplus outlet, specifically chosen for its GT-2 pulley compatibility with my servo controller's requirements. Fortunately, the 24-volt DC motor features dual shafts, allowing the encoder to attach directly to the 3mm shaft without any additional mounting hardware. The motor housing itself lacked any attachment points, necessitating the use of an encoder mount that presses over the motor casing. To achieve a secure fit, I sanded the interior surface of the motor's mounting area and applied a few drops of gorilla glue for added stability. The optical system employs standard 5mm LED-style transmitters and SFH203 visible light photodiode receivers. Depending on the specific setup, some minor sanding or drilling may be necessary to ensure a snug press fit between the components. The square blocks play a crucial role in connecting the upper and lower sections of the encoder, with neither glue nor fasteners being required for their secure attachment (as evident from the accompanying photos).
