Rose with stem & thorns
thingiverse
For Valentine's Day, I wanted to create something special for my wife, so I chose the beautiful rose petals from XYZWorkshop (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:152642). However, I felt the 3mm filament stem wasn't up to par, so I designed two alternative stems - one with and one without thorns. To create a custom stem, I used an attached oscad script that allows you to select the number of thorns and angle, evenly spacing them vertically and radially around the stem. Note, the rose petal STL is from thing 152642 (not my design). For printing, I used standard settings in MakerWare on a Replicator 2. Be cautious of overhang problems when setting thorn angles; I found that an angle of >=45 usually works well, but your results may vary based on your printer. Lastly, I secured the stem and flower with a drop of superglue for added stability.
