Rose Index - Indexing fixture
prusaprinters

This fixture is used for indexing work using a vise and square for 45, 60, and 90 degree angles. Of course this printed version is not going to be as durable or precise as the commercial metal version, but should still be useful for many applications.

Update Jan. 29, 2021 : Added a second version of this tool with 5, 7, and 9 sided polygons. Search for "Rose Index" to find all versions.

A commercial version of this tool (and a useful how-to video) is here :

https://www.lakeshorecarbide.com/14-1rangerose-index45-60-90degreeindexingblock.aspx

There are large (diameters up to 50mm) and small (diameters up to 25mm) versions of this print. Each print needs to be tapped for the appropriate size setscrew as follows :

small : 1/4"-20TPI (M6-1)

large : 5/16-18TPI (M8-1.25)

Ideally a brass-tipped setscrew should be used, but alternatively a brass or aluminum shim can be used to prevent the setscrew from marring the work. Remember that these are plastic and do not over-tighten the setscrew; use it only to hold the fixture in place, and not as a clamp.

The OnShape 3D CAD files for this are here:

https://cad.onshape.com/documents/bbf490b770c98bc28006f66e/w/92e9ace3b583525dd678cf49/e/baad6fb73ca8671962616dc8

Print instructions

Print in PLA using the 3mf files provided; otherwise :

perimeters = 3

infill 15% rectilinear

In addition, for the larger size I used a modifier block to increase the perimeters around the tapped hole to 5, for additional strength.
