The rose is the flower of roses, bushes of the genus Rosa and the family Rosaceae. The garden rose is characterized above all by the multiplication of its embedded petals that give it its characteristic shape. Appreciated for its beauty and scent, celebrated since antiquity by many poets and writers as well as painters for its colors which go from pure white to deep purple passing through yellow and all intermediate nuances, and for its perfume, she has become the "queen of flowers" in the Western world (the peony disputes this title with her in China), present in almost every garden and almost every bouquet. The rose is one of the most cultivated plants in the world and it occupies the first place on the market of cut flowers (with some 730 billion euros in 2008) but we often forget that roses are also wild plants (the most known in Europe is the eglantine) with simple flowers at five petals, which became fashionable under the name "botanical roses" for their more natural aspect. The cultivated roses are the result of several millennia of empirical transformations, then methodical since the end of the 18th century, particularly by hybridization. The varieties are countless, we estimate to be over 3,000 the number of cultivars currently available in the world. The existence of roses dates back well before antiquity, proof is the fossils found in western America and dated over 40 million years.
