Romul Ladea, better known as Rum Ladea (1901-1970), was a renowned Romanian sculptor and educator. Following his education, he relocated to Paris where he participated in numerous exhibitions and workshops throughout the city. In 1924, he enrolled at the Julien Academy and worked full-time in Constantin Brancusi's studio. His artwork is characterized by profound realism, with clear expressions on the faces of his subjects, influenced by the likes of Brancusi, Rodin, and Michelangelo. He soon emerged as the de facto founder of Romanian modern sculpture, exerting a significant impact on Romanian art (stern, strong portraits became the norm in the latter half of the 20th century). At his inaugural solo exhibition, Ladea revealed his artistic philosophy: "In reality, there was only one path I pursued throughout my apprenticeship and continued to follow for the entirety of my life. It was to carefully study and remember folk art, while simultaneously delving into its deepest spiritual meanings characteristic of human existence."
