The ancient church of Santa Maria de Retortillo rises from the ashes of Juliobriga's forgotten ruins. Its sturdy structure seems to date back to late twelfth-century Romanesque times. This modest sanctuary boasts a single nave and apse, evoking a sense of timelessness. As visitors make their way to the entrance, they discover that the main west door lies hidden beneath an impressive staircase leading up to the bell tower. Upon closer inspection, the arches below exhibit striking similarities with those found at Villacantid (Campoo de Suso), sparking speculation that this church may have been completed in the late twelfth century as well. Initially, observers noticed a stylistic difference, but further investigation of the nearby Knights' Castle and the majestic Triumphal Arch leads many to conclude that it was crafted by renowned masters active in Aguilar de Campo during that period. Located alongside the church is a high medieval cemetery replete with ancient slabs, stones, and intricately carved sarcophagi that may have originated as far back as the eighth century AD. A pivotal discovery within this necropolis lies at hand: a well-preserved stele bearing the name Teudesinde now housed at Santander's Regional Museum. According to historians, Juliobriga once lay desolate for many centuries until settlers finally reclaimed their place of heritage.
