The Historical Chess Set Series#10- Romanian Bundesform Chess SetThe Romanian Bundesform chess piece design is a unique and distinctive style of chess piece that originated in Romania in the early 20th century. A cylindrical shape with a flat top, rounded base, and a small ball or knob on top of the piece characterizes the design. Often painted in bright colors, manufacturers typically make chess pieces out of wood or plastic. The significance of the Romanian Bundesform design lies in its contribution to the evolution of chess piece design. Before the Bundesform design, artisans carved chess pieces in a more traditional, figurative style, representing specific characters such as kings, queens, knights, and bishops. The Bundesform design represented a departure from this tradition, with more abstract and geometric pieces.Several foreign chess piece designs, including the Staunton design from England and the French Regence design, influenced the Romanian Bundesform design. However, the Bundesform design differs from these designs in several fundamental ways. For example, the Staunton design features more realistic, figurative pieces with more intricate details. In contrast, the Bundesform design is more abstract and simplified. On the other hand, the French Regence design features pieces that are more ornate and decorative, with intricate carvings and details.Overall, the Romanian Bundesform chess piece design represents an essential milestone in the evolution of chess piece design. Its unique style and distinctive features continue to be appreciated by chess enthusiasts worldwide.NOTES:I found the Knights roughly carved in all examples of this style of chess set. I don't know if this is an artifact of the chess piece design or a relic of the manufacturing process then in place. The Knights modeled in this set may be slightly less rough-looking than their original counterparts.Size (height/base): With a king height of 80 mm (~3 ⅛") when printed as modeled, this set is on the lower end of Staunton Scale 4 (< St. 4).♔ King: 80 mm / 36 mm♕ Queen: 70.3 mm / 33.5 mm♗ Bishop: 61.5 mm / 34.8 mm♘ Knight: 56.2 mm / 31.1 mm♖ Rook: 46.3 mm / 32.5 mm♙ Pawn: 43 mm / 30.1 mmScaling:To resize this set to one of the following standard sizes, scale the model by the factor given before printing.FIDE Size 1 - St. 5 (King 87 mm): 1.09 (109%)FIDE / UCSF Tournament - St. 6 (King 94 mm):  1.18 (118%)Club Size - St. 9 (King 112 mm): 1.40 (140%)REFERENCES:Dr. Holger Langer Collection - Romanian “Bundesform” Chess SetABOUT THE HISTORICAL CHESS SET SERIES:Introducing a remarkable resource for chess lovers and history buffs – a collection of historical chess set printable models from around the world!
