The majestic Barberini Vase, a stunning dark blue glass masterpiece adorned with exquisite white figures, stands as the most impressive surviving Roman cameo glass relic to this day. Once part of the esteemed Barberini family collection, it eventually found its way into the possession of the duchess of Portland in the 18th century. The vase has been meticulously replicated numerous times, especially during the Victorian era. Notably, Josiah Wedgwood successfully recreated it in jasperware with raised white figures in 1790, while John Northwood of Stourbridge, England, skillfully duplicated it in glass by 1876. In a devastating turn of events, the original vase met its demise in 1845 while on display at the British Museum, where it currently resides; fortunately, skilled restorers were able to meticulously restore the masterpiece.
