A stunning example of Roman craftsmanship is a dark blue glass vase adorned with white figures, considered the finest surviving work of cameo glass from ancient Rome. Once owned by the esteemed Barberini family, this masterpiece has also been referred to as the Barberini Vase. The duchess of Portland acquired it in the 18th century, and its beauty inspired numerous copies throughout history. Notably, during the Victorian era, many reproductions were created, but those made by Josiah Wedgwood in 1790 stand out for their exceptional accuracy. He skillfully replicated the vase in jasperware with white figures in relief. Another renowned craftsman, John Northwood of Stourbridge, England, also produced a precise copy in glass, completing it in 1876. Tragically, in 1845, while housed at the British Museum, the original vase was shattered, requiring meticulous restoration to preserve its intricate beauty for future generations.
